Today marks a significant Astrological event as the powerful and transformative Pluto moves into innovative and progressive Aquarius. This year, it will sit in Aquarius for most of the year, until a little retrograde dance back into Capricorn on 2nd September, until its final day in Capricorn in our lifetimes on 19th October 2024.
Why is that a big deal? ... Well, Pluto is the Daddy of generational planets, meaning that it is extremely slow-moving, affecting us societally and generationally, as well as personally. Thanks to its lengthy 248 year orbit around the Sun, Pluto spends a long time in each sign. It'll stay in Aquarius for the next twenty years, so we'll have plenty of time to get used to our 'new normal.'
None of us know exactly what's in store for us, but one thing's for certain ... With Pluto being the planet of transformation, endings, and new beginnings, there are going to be some profound shifts that will begin to shape our collective destiny over the coming decades.
The future is finally here!
Generations That Pluto Built
Here is a look at how the ages and stages of Pluto through the Astrological signs have informed our recent history.
N.B. When considering the impact of generations of people, we often look to when their most impactful 'coming of age' years occur, which is ordinarily anywhere between the teenage years and young adulthood. (So for example Pluto in Leo generation would have been at its height between the late 1940's and the 1970's).
PLUTO IN LEO - BABY BOOMERS - 1937 to 1958
People born in this era started to redefine what it meant to be uniquely themselves, to have choices, to have voices, and to decide what they wanted to do and how they wanted to look doing it. They pushed back in dramatic Leo style against political and military systems, paving the way for a more conscious, inclusive, free, and loving way of life.
PLUTO IN VIRGO - EARLY GEN X - 1956 to 1972
This generation of people worked hard to grow their businesses for financial independence, seeing many people rewarded by hard work, instead of family lineage. They also worked hard to create health on all levels, with an explosion of awareness in alternative healing methods, as well as leaps forward in standard medical and psychological practices.
PLUTO IN LIBRA - LATE GEN X - 1971 to 1984
The Pluto in Libra generation saw through and attempted to resolve all areas of imbalance and injustice. Feminism and Girl Power took another surge forward, with women demanding equality. In matters of love, these individuals began to redefine family norms, with all manner of different family configurations becoming more common.
PLUTO IN SCORPIO - MILLENIALS - 1983 to 1995
Facing some very primal fears, this generation witnessed profound themes of death and sex, with the rise of HIV and AIDS. Diving deeply into the depths of the psyche, we saw people experiment with goth and emo themes of self-expression. In true Scorpio style, all forms of subversive, underground, and marginalised society made itself known during this time, further promoting a call for inclusion and acceptance.
PLUTO IN SAGITTARIUS - EARLY GEN Z - 1995 to 2008
This generation is thirsty for knowledge and adventure. There will be no stone unturned as they seek to expand themselves in every area of life. Even technologically, the internet has become the go-to place to find answers to almost every question in super-quick time. Attention spans requiring the influx of a fast stream of new knowledge is now very much the norm.
PLUTO IN CAPRICORN - LATE GEN Z & GEN ALPHA - 2008 to 2024
These individuals are likely to be seen as highly hard-working, maybe due to societal and economic pressures. Serious about transforming what it means to be successful in business and life, this generation will see a rise in the number of entrepreneurs, working creatively outside of the more traditional capitalist systems.
PLUTO IN AQUARIUS - GEN ALPHA, GEN BETA & ??? - 2023 to 2044
Time will tell how this generation of humans will use their unique talents to inform our culture and community, but I have a feeling that they will be highly forward-thinking and at one with all forms of technology. Think sci-fi meets reality!
What's Coming?
Aquarius, ruled traditionally by Uranus, heralds a focus on collective consciousness, group dynamics, and the advancement of humanity. Pluto's transformative energy, when channeled through Aquarius, suggests a period of intense societal restructuring and a deep exploration of unconventional ideas. Brace yourselves for a call to revolutionize social systems, challenge norms, and embrace progressive ideals.
Of course, where Pluto is located in transit to your Natal Chart has a pivotal key to decoding what is currently at play for you personally. For example, Pluto in Aquarius is currently transiting my 5th house, meaning that I might be inspired to take up new exciting hobbies that include some new technology or advanced ideology.
Technological Renaissance
Pluto's influence in Aquarius may manifest as a technological renaissance, propelling society into new frontiers of innovation. Expect breakthroughs in science, artificial intelligence, and the integration of technology into our daily lives. The next chapter promises to be marked by radical advancements that reshape the way we connect, communicate, and perceive the world around us.
Buckle Up for the Ride
As Pluto weaves its transformative magic in Aquarius, it's essential to remain open to change and be receptive to new ideas. Embrace the spirit of collaboration, connect with like-minded visionaries, and be prepared to ride the waves of innovation. The next few decades encourage us to break free from limitations, explore uncharted territories, and collectively pave the way for a more enlightened and progressive future.
With all this emphasis on technology, it may feel like we're forgetting about our humanness. But fear not. Aquarius also fosters highly humanitarian ideals, so we will have a conscious awareness of balancing technological and scientific innovation with how we best put that to use to improve our species and the planet that we live on.
May this cosmic journey through Pluto in Aquarius inspire us all to reach for the stars and manifest a future that reflects the limitless potential of the human spirit.
N.B. Pluto was downgraded from the 9th planet in our solar system to one of many 'dwarf planets' in August 2006, but from the perspective of Astrology, I (along with many other Astrologers) still choose to use the term 'planet' when describing Pluto ... and unapologetically so.
